Nocturnal x Midsumma: Lunar New Year Disco is an interactive experience where the audience will have an exclusive after dark access to permanent galleries at Melbourne Museum, as well as back of house collection displays. The night will have two tournaments, a 1 vs 1 waacking battle and a queer performance of Punking Dramatics showdown. Competitors will vie for the eyes of the crowd and judges as they party to the disco beats broadcasting on Hope St Radio.
Curated by Jonathan Homsey – an arts maker and manager creative with an artistic connection between the intersection of street dance, visual art and social engagement, Nocturnal x Midsumma Lunar New Year Disco is a queer lunar new year party, where you can celebrate the lunar new year by being you, being visible and wishing for good fortune under the shiny disco ball. Dotted with open bars, great food, roving entertainment and opportunities to explore big ideas across collections, cultures and time.
This event offers two supporting professional workshops: Waacking Intensive Workshop and Punking Dramatic Masterclass. Waacking champion Chrissy Chou along with Pangina Heals dissect and explore the forms and styles so you can amplify your queer performance skills for the competition (registration via Midsumma website). If you are entering the Lunar New Year Disco x Nocturnal dance battle, it is strongly recommended to take the Masterclasses (for intermediate and advanced dancers) or the Workshop (for all levels of experience).
